Advanced Modified Atmosphere/Modified Humidity Packaging Solutions for Shelf-Life Extension
Culinary and oriental herbs are highly perishable with delicate leaf structures that make them extremely susceptible to rapid quality deterioration. Their high surface area to volume ratio leads to accelerated moisture loss, wilting, and loss of fresh appearance. Key challenges include rapid yellowing and browning of leaves, loss of characteristic aroma and flavor compounds, wilting and loss of crispness, severe dehydration and weight loss, and microbial decay particularly in high-humidity conditions. Effective herb packaging should address these challenges.
StePacPPC modified atmosphere/modified humidity packaging solutions preserve fresh quality by naturally creating an environment inside the closed packaging that slows respiration, reduces dehydration and weight loss, inhibits ethylene and suppresses microbial decay. High-water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) films are available for bulk packaging applications to help release excess moisture when necessary and assist in reducing the risk of microbial decay.
